Is SaaS Dead?

That is a big statement. But if you have followed the news over the last couple of weeks about Claude CoWork and what it is doing, the question is at least worth asking.

The pace of technology right now is mind blowing.

I have been an avid user of large language models for several years, with ChatGPT being my primary tool. What these tools can do today goes far beyond spell checking or writing emails.

Recently I started experimenting with what people call “vibe coding.” I know my way around a computer, but I am certainly not a programmer. Yet over the past couple of weeks I have built some pretty remarkable things using simple prompt engineering.

For example, I built a landing page for the Collective to help educate new clients about what it is and how it works:

Lovable AI has been my tool of choice for this type of work. Claude CoWork appears to take this concept even further. From what I understand, it is a desktop application that can interact directly with files on your computer and automate complex tasks.

I am eager to test it, but our IT team rightly keeps us cautious. AI tools are powerful, but we take our clients’ data very seriously and will not risk compromising it.

Still, it raises an interesting question. What happens to the SaaS world when anyone can spin up a custom application in minutes?

For example, I recently needed a sales dashboard to track where prospects are in our pipeline. My project management system could not do it easily, so I built a HubSpot style dashboard myself that pulls data in real time from our other systems.

You could brainstorm with them and get real feedback on your business ideas without the usual ChatGPT fluff. You know what I mean. Technology is moving at breakneck speed right now. It is definitely an interesting time to be building things.
