The Pumpkin King Problem
Every October, I watch The Nightmare Before Christmas with the kids. It’s our tradition. They groan and push back every year, but I love it. And every year, I think the same thing: Jack is just bored with his job and needs a new challenge.

Jack Skellington is the Pumpkin King. He’s the best at what he does. The whole town counts on him to run Halloween, and every year he delivers. But he’s bored out of his mind.
He’s been running Halloween for so long that it runs on autopilot. The scares, the screams, the applause. None of it moves him anymore. Success didn’t fix that feeling. If anything, it made it worse, because everyone expects him to keep doing the same thing.
Then he stumbles into Christmas Town, and something wakes up inside him. It’s new. It’s exciting. It’s different. For the first time in years, Jack isn’t the expert. He’s curious again. And that’s the feeling he’s been missing all along: a real challenge.
I know that feeling. About 4 years ago, our firm was doing well. Clients were happy. The work was getting done. But I felt stuck running the same play every year. Then we found EOS, and it lit a fire in me again.
Here’s the part of the movie people forget. Jack’s Christmas plan goes badly. He tries to become something he’s not. He does it alone. And he ignores Sally, the one person telling him the truth.
In the end, Jack goes home and brings new energy to the thing he was already great at.
That’s what EOS did for us. It didn’t turn us into a different firm. It gave us a clear vision, a real leadership team, and people willing to tell me the truth.
This week, we held our quarterly meeting. We mapped out Q4, took an honest look in the mirror, and checked our course against our long term goals. Here’s what we’re working on:
Moving to SharePoint. This gives us stronger security and more room to automate.
Hiring advisory first people. We want team members who think beyond the tax return.
Building better processes. We want to get faster without ever cutting corners on quality.
None of it is flashy. All of it moves us forward.
So before the year ends, ask yourself 3 questions:
What part of my business feels stale?
Am I trying to fix it alone?
Who is my Sally, the person who will tell me the truth?
Jack didn’t need a new holiday. He needed a new spark for his own.
What’s yours? Hit reply and tell me.
Congrats to our Vision winner
During our Tax Plan Series, we promised that everyone who shared the newsletter would be entered in a drawing. 38 clients, colleagues, and friends of the firm shared it. Our lucky winner is James Thompson, and we’re now building his tax plan. Thank you to everyone who shared the newsletter and entered the drawing!
And if you would like to tax plan for next year , we only have 6 spots left to service tax planning clients. And with 8 weeks left and Thanksgiving and Christmas , you really have to jump on it this coming week if you want to get the full value. Dress like a tax director for Halloween
As I mentioned, our quarterly firmwide meeting was this past Wednesday. And we all dressed up as our favorite Tax Director, Faisal Said. If you know Faisal, you know he has a look! Thanks to FS for being such a good sport about it.
