The $26K Penalty That Didn’t Stand a Chance

You know we work with a lot of syndication groups , funds and business clients. What you may not know is that the IRS is deadly serious about deadlines , especially when it comes to partnership tax returns.
Here’s the deal: if you’ve got a partnership ( Form 1065), your return is due March 15th. Can’t make it? You must file an extension. Those extensions aren’t just a courtesy , they’re crucial. Without one, the IRS hits you with a $245 per partner, per month late penalty.
One of our newer clients, a 26-member LLC, learned this the hard way. They filed 4 months late , no extension in place. Like clockwork, they got the dreaded IRS notice: $26,460 in penalties.
IRS notices are never fun, and this one definitely raised some blood pressure. But luckily, they were working with us.
As you may remember, we now have the ability to monitor your IRS account in real time. As soon as that notice hit, we went to work , letters were written, calls were made, and our IRS account monitoring kept us in the loop every step of the way.
Last week, we got the alert: penalty fully abated. Client now owes the IRS: $0. That’s a win.
So what’s the moral of the story?
Always file your extension.
If you're working with us, we’ll handle it , but please make sure we have all your entities on our radar.
If you don’t already have audit protection or ongoing IRS support through our firm, we can fix that. Let’s get you covered before the next IRS letter shows up.
Last Call: Real Estate Tax Secrets Unlocked This Week
Our Tax Planning Cohort is wrapping up and we’re going out with a bang.
Last week, we tackled Tax Strategies for W-2 Earners, and if you were there, you know we didn’t hold back. We covered everything from high-level strategies anyone can use to the spicy stuff: charitable giving with DAFs, leveraged contributions, oil and gas investments, film investments, solar, short-term rentals, and more. As a bonus, everyone who attended got a free Tax Projection, a $750 service we gave away at no cost. If you're planning to implement any strategy, this is essential. You need to know where you stand, and we can model that for you to show exactly how the numbers play out.
Missed it? No worries , the replay is available to our Collective Members right here:
